Jade Walker JadeWalker

2007 Baking Apprentice of the Year

Jade Walker is the 2007 Baking Apprentice of the Year. In a competition containing four categories – Bread, Cakes, Pastries and Cookies – Jade obtained a first place in the bread and cake categories and second place in the pastry and cookie categories making her the best overall baking apprentice for 2007.

Jade is very pleased with her win, particularly as last year she was runner up in the competition and only a few years ago wasn’t sure what career path she wanted to follow. "I used to work in the shopfront of the Narrandera Bakery and asked for a week’s work experience as a baker. I gained an apprenticeship after that and enrolled at GOTAFE for the training," said Jade.

Jade completed her on-campus training in one week blocks during the year at the Shepparton Campus and during this time has developed a real interest in decorating and cake making.

While she still has a bit more study to complete next year and is happy with her workplace, Jade has her long term sights set on gaining some overseas experience, particularly with French styles of baking. "When I come back from overseas I would be considering owning my own bakery," said Jade.

Bakery trainer, Bryan Kelly said Jade is an excellent student. "She has a fantastic attitude to her work, she is always asking questions and wanting to improve her skills," said Bryan.

"Jade is very keen to learn; she would attend as many classes as possible!" said Bryan. "Even in her holidays Jade has taken it upon herself to gain extra experience in a well renowned cake decorating business in Shepparton which underpins her willingness to learn and dedication to the bakery trade."
